William Thomas Lawton was for 50 years associated with Messrs William H Bailey and Co Ltd as Commercial Clerk, Cashier and then Secretary of the company. He was rewarded upon the death of W H Bailey in 1913 with a bequest of £200.
He was born in 1843 in Clitheroe, Lancashire and baptised on 9th July 1843 at St Mary Magdalene Church, Clitheroe. His father was James Lawton, a Block Cutter and his mother was Anne (nee Howarth) Lawton. They were married on 16th April 1839 at St James's Church, Altham near Burley, Lancashire. There appears to be no information about William's early life other than the names of his siblings, who were: Catherine (born and died in 1840 in Clitheroe), Mary (born 1841 in Clitheroe), Catherine (born 1843 in Clitheroe and possibly William's twin sister), Sarah (born 1845 in Clitheroe and died in 1847), Richard Wolstenholme (born 1852 in Manchester) and Alexander Wingate (born 1855 in Manchester).
On 13th June 1866, William married Miss Cassandra Cash at Manchester Cathedral. Cassandra (born 1845 in Broughton, Salford) was the daughter of William Cash (born 1808 in Manchester) who was an Agent, and Sophia (nee Stott) Cash (born 1808 in Manchester). In 1871 William and Cassandra lived at Brighton Place, Salford. William was aged 28 and a Commercial Clerk, Cassandra was aged 26, and their daughter Ann Howarth (born 1869 in Salford) was aged 1. In 1881, the family lived at 322 Liverpool Street, Salford. William's occupation was given as Engraver and Brass Founder. Additions to the family were: Edith (born 1873 in Salford) aged 6, Minnie (born 1876 in Salford) aged 5 and Harry (born 1878 in Salford) aged 3, who died in 1885 aged 7.
In 1891, the family lived at 44 West Ashton Street, Salford. William was aged 48 and a Secretary to a Limited Company, Cassandra was aged 46, Ann was aged 21 and a Milliner, Edith was aged 19 and a General Servant, Minnie was aged 15 and a Confectioner's Apprentice, and newcomer Florence (born 1882) was aged 9. On 1st November 1899, William's daughter Minnie married George Joseph Adams at the Stowell Memorial Church, Salford. George was born in 1868 in Aberdeen, Scotland. He was a Master Mariner and the son of James Adams, also a Master Mariner. George sadly died of an accident in 1900, at Durban, South Africa, aged only 32.
The 1901 census show that the family lived at 66 West Ashton Street, Salford. William was aged 58 and was a Secretary to a Limited Company and Cassandra was aged 56. Ann was aged 31 and a Pastry Cook, Edith was aged 28 and a Domestic Housemaid, Minnie was a widow, aged 25 and a Pastry Cook and Florence was aged 19 and a Domestic Housemaid. On 28th August 1905, Cassandra died at home aged 60. She was buried at Weaste Cemetery grave A11/CE/3101 on 31st August.
In 1911 at 456 Eccles New Road, Salford, Minnie was the Head, with William, Annie, Edith and Florence. However, Florence died on 6th September 1916 aged 34. In 1921 at the same address William was aged 78 and retired. However two years later, on 26th September 1923, William died, aged 80, and was buried in the family grave on 28th.
