William Shufflebotham (1867 - 1901)

William Shufflebotham was a Van Driver's Mate when he was accidentally killed on 1st January 1901, when he fell out of the van and was run over. He was 33 years old.

He was born in 1867 in Wigan, Lancashire and baptised at St George's Church there on 21st July. His father was John Shufflebotham (born 1841 in Astbury, near Congleton, Cheshire), who was a Butcher, and his mother was Rhoda (nee Osborne) Shufflebotham (born 1842 in Denham, Norfolk). They were married in 1866 at St George's Church Wigan. The 1871 census for William shows that he and his mother and sister Julia were visiting his father's parents, William Shufflebotham (born 1816 in Astbury, Cheshire) and Mary Shufflebotham (born 1819 at Smallwood, Cheshire) in Congleton, Cheshire. Sadly in 1877, William's mother Rhoda died, aged only 35.

In 1890 William Shufflebotham married Frances Baybut by Registrar (probably Non-conformist chapel). Frances (born 1868 in Salford) was the daughter of George Baybut (born 1843 in Hulme, Manchester) who was a Finisher, and Mary Anne Baybut (born 1841 in Patricroft, Eccles) who was a Weaver. The 1891 census show that they lived at 3 Alport Street, Salford. William was aged 24 and a General Labourer and Frances was aged 22. Their son Alfred P (born 1891 in Salford) was aged 0.

The Manchester Courier of 3rd January 1901 reported, "Shocking Fatality in Pendleton. A man named William Shufflebotham living in Robert Hall Street, Salford met with a shocking death on Tuesday afternoon. It appears that the man, who was employed by Pantechnicon Limited of Manchester, was sitting on one of the firm's vans as it was proceding along Eccles New Road. He suddenly fell off the van onto the roadway in front of the wheel of the vehicle which passed over his head. Death was almost instantaneous." William was buried at Weaste Cemetery, grave 36/DISS/2225 on 5th January 1901. Later that year, after William died, the 1901 census, shows the family lived at 96, Robert Hall Street, Salford with Frances's widowed mother Mary Ann Baybut. Frances was now a widow, aged 33 and described as a Cloth Ender and Mender. William's children were: Albert P aged 10, Louie aged 7, twins Minnie and Edith aged 5 and George aged 2. George was to die in 1905 in his 7th year.

Nearly eight years later, on 7th December 1908, at Christ Church Salford, Frances married again to Arthur Wood, (born 1872 in Astley, Lancashire), aged 37. He was a Boatman and widower of 20 Tweed Street Salford. Frances was aged 40 and gave the same address. The groom's father was George Wood who was also a Boatman. Frances's father was George Baybutt (deceased). In 1911 Frances's new family lived at 19 Lorne Street, Hulme, Manchester. Alfred was aged 20 and an assistant Salesman, Louie was aged 17 and a Shipping Clerk, and the twins were aged 15 and both Warehouse Girls. There were also three of Arthur's sons. In 1921 they lived at 1, Ellor Street, where Arthur Wood was a Publican. And in 1939 they lived at 27 West Craven Street, where Arthur Wood was a Publican, Frances was Unpaid Domestic Duties and Minnie was an Office Cleaner. In March 1949, Frances died at the age of 81, and was buried in the Shufflebotham grave 36/DISS/2225 at Weaste Cemetery on 4th March, with William.
