THOMAS MUSGROVE (1849 - 1898)


 

Thomas described himself as a Townsman and his brief obituary says for upwards of 30 years, he was a faithful servant of Messrs Deakins Limited, dyers and bleachers of 56 Brown Street, Manchester.

 

He was born in 1849, in the Regent Road area of Salford and baptised on 14th March 1849 at Christ Church, Acton Square, Salford. His father was Samuel Musgrove (born 1810 in Salford) who was a Dyer and later a Church Cleaner, and his mother was Alice (nee Benyon) Musgrove (born 1810 in Salford) They were married in 1830 at St Mary's Church in Prestwich, Manchester. Thomas's siblings, all born in Salford were: Mary Ann (born 1834), Henry (born 1836), Joseph (born 1839), Elizabeth (born 1841), Sarah (born 1843), Mary Jane (born 1846) and Ellen (born 1852). The 1841 census shows that the family lived at Hope Street, Salford, the home of Samuel's parents Samuel snr and Mary Musgrove. The baptism records for Thomas and Ellen shows that the family lived in Muslin Street, Salford.  In 1864, Thomas's mother Alice died, aged 53, and was buried in a common grave at Weaste Cemetery. The following year, his father married again to Phoebe Asmough (nee Jolly) at Manchester Cathedral.

 

On 16th April 1870, Thomas married Sarah Ann Read at Christ Church, Salford. The OPC record shows that Thomas was aged 21 and lived at 16 Muslinet Street. Sarah was aged 18, of 30 West Bank Street, off Ordsall Road, Salford and was the daughter of John Read (born 1826 in Liverpool) who was a Mechanic and his wife Mary A (born 1825 in London). The 1971 Census shows that Thomas and Sarah lived with Sarah parents at West Bank Street and their new born daughter Mary Alice (born 1871 in Salford). The 1881 census shows they still lived with Sarah's parents, but at 124 Water Street, Manchester. They had two more children Beatrice (born 1876 in Salford) and Edmund John (born 1877 in Manchester). In 1891 Thomas and Sarah lived at 18 Chalfont Street, Salford. Mary Alice was aged 20, Beatrice was aged 15 and a Boxmaker, Edmund was aged 13 and an errand boy, and newcomers Edith (born 1882 in Salford) aged 9 and Leonard (born 1885 in Salford) aged 6. In 1893 the Electoral Register shows that Thomas lived at 39 Thurlow Street, Weaste, Salford.

 

On 28th April 1898 Thomas Musgrove died at Manchester Royal Infirmary, aged 49. He was buried at Weaste Cemetery in the family grave 32/DISS/2389 on 8th May.

 

In 1901 the family lived at 28 Holly Street, Salford. Sarah was the Head, widow and aged 49. Beatrice was a Chip Box Maker, Edmund was a Bleacher's Townsman, Edith was a Cardboard Box Maker and Leonard was a Joiner's Apprentice. Later in 1901, Thomas's widow Sarah married Robert Day Gelder in Salford by Registrar. Robert (born 1837 in Pendleton) was a widower and a Baker and Flour Dealer. However, Robert died in January 1911 aged 74. The 1911 census shows Sarah lived with her daughter Edith and family at 104 Tootal Drive, Pendleton. And in 1921 she lived with her son Edmund and his family at 7 Wythburn Street, Pendleton. Sarah died the following year in September 1922, aged 71, and was buried in the Musgrove family grave 32/DISS/2389 at Weaste Cemetery on 13th September 1922.
