Samuel Nelson (1852 - 1929)

Samuel Nelson was a Butcher on Trafford Road, Salford.

He was born in 1852 in Boyle, County Roscommon, Ireland, the son of Samuel Nelson, Bolt Maker. On 27th September 1876, young Samuel was a 24-year-old Butcher of 36, Medlock Street, Hulme, Manchester when he married Margaret Emma Taylor at St Mark's Church, Hulme. Margaret lived at 36 Park Street, Hulme, aged 21, the daughter William Massey Taylor, a Butcher.

In 1881, the couple lived at 76 Trafford Road, Salford with children William (born 1877 in Salford) aged 3 and Jessie (born 1879 in Salford and baptised at the Stowell Memorial Church, Salford on 3rd August 1879) aged 1. In 1881 their third child Ettie was born in Salford and baptised at Stowell Memorial Church on 14th December 1881.

On 16th December 1901, Samuel's son William married Margaret Edith Buck, at St Thomas's Church, Pendleton. Margaret Edith was aged 24 and was the daughter of Thomas Buck (deceased) Licenced Victualler (of the Swan Hotel in Gargrave, Yorkshire). She lived at 379 Liverpool Street (corner of Athole Street) with her widowed mother and brother Thomas William Buck, who ran a Butchers shop and slaughterhouse there. (The family were from the Skipton area of Yorkshire and it appears that when father died they moved to Salford). Tragically, William died on 1st February 1904 aged 26 and was buried in A3/CE/4622 at Weaste Cemetery. William's wife Margaret Edith died the following year on 17th March 1905, aged 28 and was buried in an adjoining grave A3/CE/4628, but was recorded on the Nelson family memorial stone.

The 1911 census reveals that Samuel and family lived at 97 Trafford Road, Salford. He was aged 59 and his occupation was Butcher. His wife Margaret was aged 56 and was Assisting in the Business. Jessie was aged 31 and a School Teacher and Ettie was aged 29 and a Housekeeper. Also in the house was Margaret's sister Sophia Alcock, widow, aged 51. The following year on 26th January 1912, Samuel's wife, Margaret Emma died aged 57 and was re-united with her son William in A3/CE/4622 grave.

On 10th June 1918, 36-year-old Ettie married William Morris at the Stowell Memorial Church, Salford. William was an Insurance Clerk, aged 38, of 13 Small Street, Salford, the son of Arthur Morris, Well Sinker. (Ettie was to die on 3rd May 1947 aged 65 and was buried in the Nelson family grave).

On the 1st July 1929, Samuel Nelson died, aged 77 and was re-united with his wife Margaret Emma and son William in the family grave at Weaste Cemetery.

In 1932, Jessie must have retired from school teaching as she was 52 when she married Henry W Moore at Holy Angels Church, Claremont, Pendleton. She died on 5th April 1961 aged 81 and was buried in the Nelson family grave at Weaste Cemetery.
