Mary Peters Kay was a housewife and mother in Pendleton, Salford.
She was born Mary Peters Lamb in the second quarter of 1850 in Pendleton. Her father was John Lamb (born 1824 at Hadleigh, Cheshire) who was a Grocer, and her mother was Stella (nee Peters) Lamb (born 1823 at Litchfield, Staffordshire). They were married on 8th November 1847 at St Mary's Church, Manchester. Mary's siblings all born in Pendleton were: Elizabeth (born 1848 and sadly died in 1851 aged 3), Stella jnr (born 1852), John (born 1854), William (born 1856) and Annie (born 1857). In 1851 the family lived at Broad Street, Pendleton where husband John was a Grocer employing 23 men and 1 boy.
In June 1859, (when Mary was 9 years old), her mother Stella. sadly died, aged 35, and was buried at Cheetham Hill Wesleyan Cemetery on 8th June. The following year her father married again to Adelaide (nee Smith) Preston at St John's Church, Deansgate, Manchester. Adelaide (born 1830 in Salford) was the daughter of Joseph (an Inn Keeper) and Mary Smith of Salford, and the widow of John Preston (born 1830 in Salford) who was a Boot Maker on Chapel Street, Salford. She was to become Mary's step-mother. The 1861 census shows the Lamb family at 6, Sussex Street Salford. John was aged 37, Adelaide was aged 30, Mary was aged 10, John jnr was aged 7 and Annie was aged 4. Also in the house was Adelaide's daughter, Adelaide Preston aged 5. In 1871 the family lived at Ellor Street, Pendleton, where Mary was aged 20.
In 1874, Mary Peters Lamb married William Kay at Ascension Church, Salford. William was born in 1853 in Pendleton, but it is not clear who William's parents were. It seems that his father died young and his mother Sarah Kay married William Jelly in 1866. (And there is a William Jelly who died in 1868). So the 1871 census shows William Kay (born 1853) who is a plumber, and his siblings who lived at Pimblott Street, Pendleton, with Sarah Jelly as Head, aged 52 and a Beer house keeper. The Kay siblings were: Elizabeth (aged 20) and a Dress Maker, Edwin (aged 14) and a Coach Wheeler, and Thomas (aged 12) and a Scholar. In 1881 Mary and William lived at 2 Buxton Street, Pendleton. William was a plumber and Glazier aged 28, and Mary was aged 30. Their children are William Henry (born 1876) and Stella (born 1878).
In March 1889 William Kay died at Buxton Street, aged 36. The Manchester Courier reported "Sergeant William Kay of the 3rd Battalion Lancashire Fusiliers, (formally the 17th Lancashire Volunteers) was interred at Salford Cemetery with military honours. The firing party consisted of members of A Company to which the deceased had belonged for about 13 years. A drum and fife band also attended."
The 1901 census shows Mary and family at 76 Bury Street, Pendleton. Mary was aged 50 and a Charwoman, William Henry was aged 24 and an Iron Moulder, and Stella was aged 23 and a Cotton Reeler. In 1911 Mary was an Assistant Caretaker at Tootal Rd School and living at the school house with her brother-in-law Edwin Kay who was the Caretaker. Mary died on 17th December 1925 at Hope Hospital aged 75 and buried with her husband, father and step-mother at Weaste Cemetery, grave AA10/CE/1901.
