Mary Harvey (1790 - 1857)


 Mary Harvey was the wife of William Harvey (Mayor of Salford in 1857 and 1858), and played an important part in supporting the Bible Christian Church (BCC), Salford.

 

She was born Mary Titley in 1790 in Staffordshire, the daughter of William and Mary Titley. She was baptised at Holy Trinity Church, Eccleshall on 15th May 1791. On 19th June 1812, she married William Harvey (1787 – 1870) at Manchester Cathedral. William was born in Whittington Derbyshire, and went to live in Salford in 1804 with his cousin Joseph Brotherton. Mary and William lived in Oldfield Road in 1841 and by 1851 they lived at 8 Acton Square, off the Crescent, Salford.

 

Mary and William were members of the Bible Christian Church and indeed William helped to found the church and was Deacon from 1809 until his death in 1870. They practised the church's philosophy of abstaining from meat, alcohol and tobacco. William formed a partnership with Joseph Brotherton and then Charles Tysoe in a cotton spinning mill, and their sons and grandsons took part in the business also.

 

Their first son Joseph was born on 20th November 1812 and was baptised on 12th July 1813 at the BCC. He later shows up in the 1871 census lodging with his sister Hannah (Simpson) and Aunt Hannah (Broomhead) at Leaf Square, Pendleton. On 16th May 1816, their daughter Hannah was born and she was baptised on 17th July at the BCC. She married James Simpson (1812 - 1859) on 20th September 1843 at Manchester Cathedral. James was born in Clitheroe, Lancashire where his father was a wealthy calico printer. He became another prominent member of the BCC, serving as Deacon. He helped to form the Vegetarian Society in 1847 and was prominent in the Temperance, anti-tobacco, anti-Corn Law and Peace movements. James died on 3rd September 1859 aged 47 and Hannah died in 1890 aged 74

 

Their son James was born on 9th May 1818 and was baptised on 24th May at the BCC. In 1852 he married Ann (1825 – 1890) of Dukinfield, Cheshire at St John's, Manchester. In 1869, at the request of his father, they moved into his parent's house at 8 Acton Square, Crescent, Salford. In 1889 they retired to Bowden, Cheshire, but Ann died the following year aged 65. James was a Cotton Spinner and died in Nov. 1894 aged 76.

 

Son, William Brotherton Harvey was born on 23rd September 1821 in Salford and was baptised on 27th June 1824 at the BCC, Salford. In 1862 he married Alicia Nansen (born 1834 in Sheffield, Yorkshire) in Kendal, Westmorland. In 1871 they lived at Fitzwarren Street, Pendleton and in 1881 they lived at 160 Bolton Road, Pendleton. William was a Cotton Spinner and died in February 1900 in Wilmslow, Cheshire.

 

Son, Charles Tysoe Harvey was born in 1824 in Salford and became a surgeon. In 1858 he married Maria Lees (born 1827 in Yorkshire) at Bispham, Lancashire. In 1871 they lived in Ormskirk, Lancashire. Charles died in 1889 in Wandsworth, London.

 

Son, Edward Harvey was born in 1827 and was baptised on 28th August 1827. On 24th Jan 1856 he married Sarah Hordern in Manchester. He was a Cotton Spinner Manager and lived in Park Place, then Adelphi Terrace, Salford. He died in 1889 aged 62.

 

Mary Harvey died on 12th October 1857 at Acton Square, Salford, aged 67. She was buried in A3 vault, Weaste Cemetery on 17th October.
