JOHN THOMAS CHEERS J P  (1862 – 1934)

John Thomas Cheers was a House Painter by trade employed by the Co-operative Wholesale Society in Pendleton and rose to become their Superintendent of Painters. He was also made a Justice of the Peace for Salford in 1924.


He was born in 1862 in Pendleton, Salford. His father was Samuel Cheers (born 1827 in Rochdale, Lancashire) who was a Provisions Dealer, and his mother was Elizabeth Cheers (born 1827 in Middleton, Lancashire).


Just before John was born, the 1861 census shows that his family lived at 79 Borough Road, Pendleton, where his father Samuel was a Cotton Weaver aged 34, his mother Elizabeth was aged 33, and his siblings: Sarah Ann was aged 11, Jane was aged 7 and Elizabeth Alice was aged 2. There is no census record for 1871, but the electoral role shows that the family lived at 23 Lissadel Street, Pendleton. In 1881 the family lived at 55 Hankinson Street, Pendleton. Father Samuel was aged 54 and a Provisions Dealer, mother Elizabeth was aged 54 and John Thomas was aged 19 and a Wallpaper Hanger.


On 9th November 1884, John Thomas Cheers married Mary Richardson at St John the Evangelist Church, Farnworth, Bolton. John was aged 23, a Paperhanger of 59 Bridgewater Street, Farnworth. Mary was also aged 23 of 37 Bridgewater Street, Farnworth, the daughter of John Richardson, Boot Maker. In 1891 John and Mary lived at 6 Middlewood Street, Pendleton with two children: John Richardson (born 1885 in Pendleton) aged 5 and Harold Ewart (born 1889 in Pendleton) aged 2. In 1895, John's father Samuel died in Salford, aged 68. The 1901 census shows the family lived at 39 Keswick Grove, Pendleton. John Thomas was aged 38 and a Foreman House Painter. Mary was aged 41, John Richardson was aged 14 and a Commercial Clerk, Harold Ewart was aged 12 and Lilian Richardson (born 1894 in Pendleton) aged 7.


In 1911, the Cheers family lived at 38 Highfield Road, Pendleton. John Thomas was aged 48 and a Superintendent of Painters, Mary was aged 51, John Richardson was aged 25 and a Clerk, Harold Ewart was aged 22 and a Packer, Lilian Richardson was aged 17 and a Shop Assistant, and Roland (born 1902 in Pendleton) was aged 9. On 16th December 1918 Harold Ewart Cheers died aged 29. His death was registered at Barton-upon-Irwell, his name is on the family gravestone, but there is no record in Deceased OnLine. The 1921 census shows the family at 38 Highfied Road, Pendleton. On 11th August 1924, John Thomas was appointed Justice of the Peace for Salford.


John Thomas Cheers died at home on 11th January 1934 aged 72. He was buried at Weaste Cemetery, grave A5/DISS/198 on 16th January. The day after he died, the Manchester Guardian shows that the Nottingham Imperial Order of Oddfellows, Perseverance Lodge, Pendleton, made a donation of two guineas in his memory, to the Salford Royal Hospital Special Appeal. The following year, in 1935, John Thomas's widow Mary married Alfred F Hodson at Blackpool, Lancashire. Mary died on 29th January 1953, aged 92, at 223 Crescent Road, Crumpsall, Manchester. She was buried with John Thomas at Weaste Cemetery on 3rd February 1953.
