John Arthur Lapworth (1860 - 1928)

John Arthur Lapworth was a Fishmonger in 1891 in Leicestershire and by 1901 he was a Bookmaker's Clerk in Salford. In 1921 John was a Cotton Porter for the Fine Cotton Spinners and Doublers Association Ltd of Manchester.

He was born in the fourth quarter of 1860 in Market Bosworth, Leicestershire and baptised on 31st March 1861 in the Anglican church in Barwell, Leics. His father was Jonathan Lapworth (born 1831 in Hinckley, Leics) who was a farmer of 17 acres. His mother was Lydia (nee Neale) Lapworth (born 1829 in Burton Overy, Leics). They were married in 1857 in Leicester. In 1861 the family lived at Stapleton, Market Bosworth, Leics, where Jonathan was aged 30 and Lydia was aged 32.

John was the eldest child, and his siblings were William Jonathan (born 1862 in Barwell), and Joseph (born 1865 in Market Bosworth). In 1871 the family lived at Grey Hound Inn, Churchover, Rugby, Warwickshire. In 1881 the family lived at Park View, Richman Road, Aylestone, Blaby, Leics. Jonathan was aged 46 and a General Labourer and Lydia was aged 49. John was aged 20 and a Domestic Servant, William was aged 18 and a Domestic Servant and Joseph was aged 15 and a Domestic Servant.

There appears to be no record of the marriage of John Arthur Lapworth to Catherine Mary Cox (aka Kate), but it must have been between 1881 and 1886 as their first child John H was born in 1886 in London (according to the 1891 census. However, John H Lapworth's birth has also not been found, leading to the possibility that John H was born before Kate married John Arthur Lapworth and maybe his surname was Cox).

In 1891, the family lived at Cavendish Road, Aylestone, Blaby, Leics. John was aged 30 and a Fishmonger. Kate was born in 1862 in Bath, Somerset, and aged 29. (However her burial record of 1945 shows she was aged 87, which if true, makes her birth year as 1858). John H (born 1886 in London) was aged 5, Frank William (born 1888 in Blaby) was aged 2, and Annie Louisa (born 1890 in Aylestone) was aged 0. In 1901 the family lived at 17 St James Street, Salford. John was now aged 41 and a Bookmaker's Clerk. Other children were Florence Mary (born 1892 in Leicester) aged 8, Frederick Joseph (born 1895 in Chorlton-on-Medlock, Manchester) aged 6 and Walter (born 1897 in Chorlton-on-Medlock, Manchester). In 1911 the family lived at 36 West Ashton Street, Salford, where John, was aged 50 and a Clerk.

In 1916 Annie Louisa married William E Jones at St Cyprian's Church Salford, and in 1921 Florence Mary married Charles Toft at St Luke's Church, Weaste, Salford. The 1921 census shows that John and Kate lived at 17 Derby Road, Weaste, Salford. John was aged 61 and his occupation was Cotton Porter for Fine Cotton Spinners and Doublers Ltd of Manchester. Kate was aged 60 as Home Duties, and Walter was aged 25 and was a Handyman for Ford Motor Works Ltd in Manchester.

On 30th April 1928 John Arthur Lapworth died at Hope Hospital aged 67. He was buried at Weaste Cemetery grave O/DISS/351 on 4th May. Catherine Mary Lapworth died in 1945 at Salford Royal Hospital aged 87, and was buried on 27th December.
