James Payne was a Tailor by trade, but "for 65 years was in the employ of Salford Corporation as Lamplighter." He was also married three times.
He was born on 18th October 1823 in Otley, near Bradford, Yorkshire and was baptised there on 24th August 1926. His parents were William and Catharine Payne. Nothing is known about his early life.
In the second quarter of 1846, James Payne married Margaret Morris at Manchester Collegiate Church (later Manchester Cathedral). Margaret was born in Ireland in 1823. Their children, all born in Salford, were: Isabella (born 1846), William (born 1849), Annie Maria (born 1850), James A (born 1854), Margaret Sylvia (born 1857) and John (born 1860). In 1851 they lived at Sherratt Street, Salford, where James was a Lamplighter. In 1861 the family lived at 5 Islington Grove, Salford, where James's occupation was Tailor. Tragedy struck in April 1870 when James's wife Margaret died aged 47 and was buried in an R C common grave at Weaste Cemetery on 22nd April.
James Payne married again later in 1870 to Sarah Bull (born 1824 in Eccles) at St John's Church, Deansgate, Manchester. Sarah was a widow who had married William Bull in 1852. Her maiden name was Gregory. The 1871 census shows that James and Sarah lived at Irwell Terrace, Islington, Salford. James was aged 46 and a Tailor, and Sarah was also aged 46. Isabella was aged 24 and a General Servant, William was aged 22 and a Coach Painter, Maria was aged 20 and a Book Folder, Margaret Sylvia was aged 14 and a Pupil Teacher and Sarah's son William Henry Bull was aged 9. In September 1872, tragedy struck again as James's wife Sarah died at home, aged 48. She was buried on 27th September at Weaste Cemetery in Dissenter's common grave.
In 1873, James married for a third time to Mary Powell (born 1836 in Worsley, Lancashire) at St John's Church, Deansgate, Manchester. Mary was a widow who was married to Thomas Powell in 1862. Her maiden name was Cooke. The 1881 census shows the family at 80 Bury Street, Salford. James was aged 57 and a Tailor, and Mary was aged 45. Isabella was aged 34 and a Domestic Servant, William Henry Bull was aged 19 and a Letterpress Printer, and Mary's daughter Alice Ann Powell was aged 17 and a Cotton Reeler. In the 1891 Census, at 20 Church Street, Salford, James was aged 67 and a Lamplighter, Mary was aged 55 and Isabella was aged 42. Sadly, on 12th December 1900, James's wife Mary died at Hope Hospital, aged 66. She was buried at Weaste Cemetery, grave H/DISS/865 on 17th December.
James's daughter Annie Maria had married Joseph Finch in 1879, but sadly died in November 1884 and was buried at Weaste Cemetery, grave B17/CE/11602. Also sadly Isabella died in November 1895, at Hope Hospital, aged 48, and was buried in the same grave. In 1901 James aged 77, was a Boarder with the Herbert family at 9 Sunnyside Street, Salford, and was still a Lamplighter.
On 1st November 1907, James died at 44 Coronation Street, Salford, aged 84. He was re-united with his wife Mary at Weaste Cemetery, H/DISS/865 on 5th November.
