Charles Nelson was an Engineer and Millwright.
He was born in December 1809 at Bishop Burton, near Kingston-upon-Hull in East Yorkshire and was baptised there on 28th January 1810. His parents were Henry Nelson (born 1771) and Elizabeth (nee Farrar) Nelson (born 1770). They were married on 2nd April 1798 at Bishop Burton. There is no information about Charles' early life.
On 1st November 1830, Charles Nelson married Mary Wilson at Holy Trinity Minster, Hull. Mary was born in 1810 in Hull, East Yorkshire. The 1841 census shows that Charles, Mary and family lived at Pocket Nook, Parr, Prescot, Lancashire. Both Charles and Mary were 30 years old. Their children were: James (born 1836 in Manchester) aged 4, Jane (born 1838 in Manchester) aged 2, and Henry (born 1840 in Manchester) aged 1. The 1851 census shows the family lived at Westfield Street, Windle, St Helens, Lancashire. Charles was aged 40 and an Engineer and Mary was also aged 40, Jane was aged 13 and Henry was aged 11. Newcomers: Charles jnr (born 1842 at Prescot, Lancs) was aged 10, Elizabeth (born 1844 in Prescot) was aged 6 and Richard (born 1847 at Prescot) was aged 4. Also in the house is Mary's mother, Mary Wilson (born 1771 in Yorkshire), who is a widow.
In 1861 the family address was 46 Lorn Street, Hulme, Manchester. Charles was now 50 years old and a Millwright, and Mary was also aged 50. Henry was aged 22 and a Millwright, Charles jnr was aged 20 and an Engine Smith, Elizabeth was aged 17, Richard was aged 13 and an Assistant Pawnbroker, and newcomer Mary (born 1853 in Prescot) was aged 8. Sadly Charles jnr died on 24 July 1861, aged 20, and was buried at Weaste Cemetery grave C20/RC/2981.
The 1871 census shows the family still at Lorn Street, Hulme, where Charles was aged 61 and an Engraver in a Warehouse, Mary was aged 60 and young Mary was aged 19 and was a Dressmaker. The 1881 census show the family at 42 Lorn Street, Hulme. Charles was aged 71 and an unemployed Millwright, Mary was also aged 71, and young Mary was aged 26 and a Dressmaker.
On 29th March 1885, Charles's wife Mary, died in Hulme, Manchester, aged 74, and was buried with her son Charles jnr at Weaste Cemetery grave C20/RC/2981 on 26th March. And on 5th November 1886, Charles died at Stretford, Manchester aged 76 and was buried at Weaste Cemetery, A5/RC/Vault (next to the Mark Addy memorial) on 9th November 1886.
The names of Charles's wife Mary and son Charles jnr were also inscribed on Charles's memorial stone, along with James Norris (died April 1896) who was the husband of their daughter Elizabeth. Elizabeth died in August 1915 and was buried on 26th August 1915 in a different grave number A5/RC/1019 at Weaste Cemetery. Also in this grave is Charles's daughter Mary who died in July 1930 at Nell Lane (possibly Hospital), Withington, Manchester, aged 80.
