Charles Henry Whiteling was a Manager of a Floor Cloth (linoleum) Mill in 1881 and in 1991 he was described as Floor Cloth Printer. He and his wife had twelve children.
He was born in 1843 in London. It is not known who his parents were nor his early life, but in 1863 he married Mary Ann Tull in Newington, London. Mary Ann was born in 1842 in Southwark, London, the daughter of William Tull (born 1819 in Berkshire) and Elizabeth Tull (born 1823 in Lambeth, London).
The 1871 census shows the family lived at Fern Street, Bromley, Poplar, London. Charles was aged 28 and a Store Clerk Printer, and Mary Ann was also aged 28. Their children were William Charles (born 1865 in Lambeth) aged 5, Alice A (born 1864 in Leeds Yorkshire) aged 4, Charles Lewis (born 1869 in Leeds) aged 2 and Florence Tull (born 1870 in Bromley) aged 1. By 1881 the family had moved to 43 Gledhill Street, Salford. Additions to the family were: Frederick (born 1871 in London) aged 10, Mary Ann (born 1872 in London) aged 9, John J (born 1877 in London) aged 4, Sarah A (born 1879 in London) aged 2, and Edith E (born 1881 in Salford) aged 0. In 1891 the family lived at 9 West Albert Street, Salford, where Charles was a Floor Cloth Printer. Additions to the family were: Henry Claude (born 1883 in Salford) aged 8, Frances M (born 1887 in Salford) age 4, and Emma E (born 1890 in Salford) aged 1.
In late December 1888, their eldest child sadly died aged 24. The Salford Reporter of 12th January 1889 records, "Funeral of Salford Volunteer. On Saturday afternoon the funeral of William Charles Whiteling, Sergeant of the 3rd volunteer battalion of the Lancashire Fusiliers, took place at Salford Cemetery. The coffin was carried on a gun carriage furnished by the 9th Lancers. The customary volley was fired over the grave." In January 1893, Charles Henry's wife Mary Ann, sadly died at Robert Hall Street, Ordsall, Salford, aged 58. She was buried with her son at Weaste Cemetery F/CE/737 on 11th January. Also in 1889 Alice married James Kearns at St Clement's Church, Ordsall. In 1994 daughter Mary Ann married William Yeo at St Clement's Church. And in 1900 daughter Sarah married James Woodhouse at St Bartholomew's Church.
The 1901 Census shows that, Charles Henry was aged 58 and lived with his daughter Alice Amelia Kearns and her family at 21 New Park Road, Salford. Also in the house were his daughters Edith aged 21 and Frances aged 14. Also in 1901 son Charles Lewis lived at 7 Turnerson Street, Salford with his wife Emma and 5 children. Also in 1901, son Frederick (Waterworks Inspector) lived at 17 Hyde Street, Chorlton with his wife Lillie and two daughters Lillie and Olive.
In 1903, daughter Edith married Henry Dale at St Cyprian's Church, Salford, and in 1911 they lived at 53 Stowell Street, Pendleton with their children Minnie and Charles Henry. Son Henry Claude was a lodger there, although he emigrated to Philadelphia, US in 1917. Daughter Florence married Walter Fielding in 1913 at Stowell Memorial.
In March 1916, Charles Henry Whiteling died in Salford aged 73. He was buried in the family grave at Weaste Cemetery F/CE/737 on 15th March 1916.
