Albert Edward Schofield (1908 - 1950)


Albert Edward Schofield was a lorry driver by trade and died as a result of an accident on Washway Road, Sale, Cheshire.


He was born on 7th April 1908 in Salford just weeks after his one-year-old elder brother with the same name, died. His father was Henry Schofield (born 1872 in Macclesfield, Cheshire) who was a soldier in the 20th Regiment of Foot (Lancashire Fusiliers, 1st Battalion). His mother was Mary (nee Hynes) Schofield (born 1878 in Galway, Ireland). They were married in 1896 in Galway, when Henry was stationed there.


In 1911 the family lived at 256 Liverpool Street, Salford where Albert's father Henry was aged 38 and his mother was aged 33. Albert's siblings were Henry jnr (born 1899 in Preston) aged 12; Annie (born 1901 in Malta) age 10; Frederick (born 1904 in Bury) aged 7; Charles (born 1905 in Bury) aged 6; and Delia May (born 1910 in Salford) aged 1.


In 1921 the family address was 279 Liverpool Street, Salford. Henry was aged 49 and a Retired Soldier, Out of Work; Mary was aged 44 on Domestic Duties; Henry jnr was aged 22 and was a Crane Driver at Lancashire Dynamo Engineering; Frederick was aged 17 and a Motor Driver employed by Liverpool and Manchester Motor Transport; Charles was aged 16 and a Pipe Fitter at Metropolitan Vickers Engineering Co; Albert Edward was aged 13 and still at school; and Delia May was aged 12 and also at school. Annie does not appear on the 1921 census.


In 1935 Albert Edward Schofield married Mary Crilley at the church of St Clement, Ordsall, Salford. Mary was born on 9th July 1913 and was the daughter of Hugh Crilley (born 1881 in Hulme, Manchester) who was a Dock Labourer, before enlisting in WW1 and killed in action at the Dardenelles, Turkey. Her mother was Frances Ruth (nee Teare) Crilley (born 1881 in Douglas, Isle of Man), and they were married in 1901 at St Cyprian's Church, Salford.


Albert and Mary had four children: Carole M (born 1938 in Salford); Frances A (born 1940 in Salford); Peter Edward (born 1942 in Blackpool); and Irene June (born 1945 in Salford). In the 1939 Register, Albert and Mary lived at 25 Percy Street, Salford, where Albert was described as Heavy Motor Lorry Driver. In 1950 their address was 23 Ash Grove, Salford 5.


On 29th September 1950, Albert Edward Schofield, aged 42, was accidentally killed on Washway Road, Sale, Cheshire. It would appear that this was a road traffic accident, but there is no report available. He was buried at Weaste Cemetery in grave A8/RC/269. Three years later in 1953, his widow Mary married James H MacLean at St James Hope Church, Salford.
