Weaste Cemetery

Keen interest in Joseph Brotherton on Weaste Tour.

Salford's first Member of Parliment Joseph Brotherton and his fine memorial took centre stage on the annual guided tour of Weaste Cemetery today. Pete Kilvert explained that he had been a cotton mill owner, then Minister of the Bible Christian Church on King Street and Salford's first MP from 1832 until his death in 1857.  Following on from the church's policy of not eating meat, Joseph Brotherton had been instrumental in founding the Vegetarian Society and his wife Martha had written the first Vegetarian Cookery book in modern times. A group of 25 people enjoyed the tour this year.
