William Brassington (1822 - 1887)
William Brassington ran a Tailor's business on Chapel Street, and was a highly respected member of the Salford Board of Guardians.
He was born in Salford in 1822 and married Ann Smith in 1846. The family gravestone records that they had a daughter Elizabeth who was born in 1848, married Charles W. Riding in 1870, but died on 17th June 1872, aged 24. They also had a son William who was born in 1853 and died on 22nd November 1858, aged 5 years and 5 months.
William ran the business of Tailor and Draper, with premises at 116, (then later 108), Chapel Street. At one time he had supplied clothing to the Salford Police Force. He was also a member of the Salford Board of Guardians for over 20 years and had been senior Vice Chairman and Chairman of the Finance Committee. He was first elected in 1862 and served for a year, then elected again in 1867. He was the father of the Board and none more popular. In politics, William was Liberal and contested Trinity Ward in the 1883 Municipal Elections, but was defeated. He was also a member of Chapel Street Congregational Church.
William was unwell for some time before he died, which was on Wednesday 30th March 1887, at his residence in Chapel Street. He was 65 years of age. His wife Ann outlasted him by 20 years, dying on 30th July 1907.
The funeral of William Brassington took place on Tuesday 5th April and although he had requested that it be as quiet as possible, all the members of the Board of Guardians attended. The service was conducted by Reverend James Clark of the Bible Christian Church, who was also the Chairman of the Board of Guardians. The Chapel was crowded with friends and relatives. The coffin was of oak with brass mountings and the plate was inscribed "William Brassington, died 30th March 1887 aged 65 years". He was interred in plot A5 of the Dissenters portion of Weaste Cemetery.
