Richard Dearden (1814 - 1883)

Richard Dearden was a Salford Councillor and a member of the Salford Board of Guardians.

The Salford Reporter of 4th August 1883 records his Funeral Sermon, which took place at the Pendleton Congregational Church on Sunday 29th July 1883, read by Rev. Edwin Walker. He said, "Mr Dearden had spent a large part of his life in public service. Retiring from business at an early age he devoted an unusual amount of time and the maturity of his powers to the promotion of the best interests of the borough. For 26 years he was a member of the Salford Board of Guardians and from 1865, with one short interval, a member of Salford Town Council.

He was much in the public eye and generally admitted to be steadfast and unwavering in his support of every movement that commanded his sympathy. He was chivalrous in his loyalty to his colleagues and fellow workers in every good cause. Mr Dearden was youthful in spirit and feeling to the end. He was wishful to contribute to social, political, moral and religious progress as he was twenty five years ago".
