James Henry Coop (1860 - 1932)


James Henry Coop was a member of the well known Salford family of Undertakers and was also a Salford Councillor for 7 years.

 

He was born in Pendleton in 1860 and lived in the district until his retirement from the family business, Messrs W. Coop and Sons, Funeral Directors, in 1922, when he moved to Blackpool. For seven years, Mr Coop represented St.Thomas's Ward for the Conservatives. He was defeated by Cllr J.W.Bloom, who died in November 1931. The subsequent by-election in December of that year returned James's brother, Mr W. Coop. James was also a Freemason and like his father, belonged to Harmony Lodge.

 

James Henry Coop died at is home, 28a Whitegate Drive Blackpool, on Thursday 7th April 1932. He left five daughters and a son, (all married). His wife Annie had died earlier on 30th November 1921. The funeral was held at Weaste Cemetery on Monday 11th April 1932 where there was a large gathering of family and friends. It was conducted by his old friend, the Reverend T. Edelston, vicar of St.Paul's Church, Pendleton.
