Harold Jones (Killed at work) (1896 - 1924)


Harold Jones was a callender machine operator who became trapped in his machine and died on 17th October 1924.

 

The Salford Reporter of 25th October 1924 records the Inquest of Harold Jones aged 28 of Falcon Street, Weaste, Pendleton, employed at Messrs Winterbottom, Book Cloth Co. Ltd, Victoria Mills, Pendleton. Giving evidence of identification, Dora M. Jones, wife of the deceased said that her husband left home at 6.30 am and she was later called to Salford Royal Hospital to identify him.

 

Sydney Pickersgill of Falcon Street said that the deceased was employed on one callender machine and he was employed on a similar machine opposite it. At 11.30 on Friday morning he saw the cylinder of the deceased's machine lift. The witness walked around the machine to see what was wrong, but before he got there the deceased's machine stopped. The deceased was found fastened in the gearing of the machine, his right hand and shoulder being entangled there. The machine was oiled before work started there and never while the machinery was running. The floor was not slippery.

 

Daniel Ryan of Nansen Street Pendlebury said that he stopped the machine when the accident happened. The top cylinder had to be lifted before the deceased could be released. James Arthur Unsworth of Entwistle Place, Whit Lane, Pendleton, who had rendered First-aid to the deceased said that his right arm was torn out and his shoulder badly lacerated. Constable Hughes said the deceased was unconscious when he conveyed him to Salford Royal Hospital.

 

Dr. T. A. McLaren, House Physician at Salford Royal Hospital said that the deceased was admitted at 11.50 am on Friday and died at 12.10 pm the same day. The cause of death was shock and haemorrhage.

 

The Coroner returned a verdict of Accidental Death.

 

Thomas was buried on 23rd October in section J of the Dissenters portion of Weaste Cemetery.
