George Battye (1870 - 1932)

George Battye was a well-known businessman in Pendleton. He had a drysalter's business on Ford Lane, Pendleton and was also a keen worker for Salford Royal Hospital.

He was born in Pendleton in 1870. He lived at 22 Alresford Road, Irlam o' the Height and attended St. John's Church. His business occupied most of his time, although he and his wife enthusiastically supported Salford Royal Hospital. They were also very keen supporters of musical concerts in Salford and Manchester; patrons of the popular Celebrity Concerts and regulars at Salford Central Hall on Saturday nights. George was also a Freemason and was a member of St. John's Lodge No 346 in Salford.

Mr Battye became unwell in October 1931 and gradually became worse. In November he was forced to take to his bed as the illness became more painful. Although he seemed to respond to medical treatment he was receiving there was a relapse on Friday 4th March, when he died at his residence. He was 61 years old. The Funeral service was at St John's Church, Irlams o' the Height, on Wednesday 9th March, conducted by Rev. H.F.Steel MA, followed by interment at Weaste Cemetery.
