Charles Edgar Leytham MA (1867 - 1932)


The Reverend Charles Edgar Leytham MA was for 20 years, the esteemed Rector at the Stowell Memorial Church on Trafford Road.

 

Charles was a native of Lancaster, being educated at Lancaster Grammar School and then Selwyn College at Cambridge University, where he received his BA in 1888. An MA was conferred on him in 1899. His first Curacy was at St. Mark's Church in Hulme and then he became Priest at Manchester Cathedral in 1900. In 1901, he moved to Holy Trinity Church, Toxteth, Liverpool and then in 1905 to Standish Parish Church for 7 years. He came to the Stowell Memorial Church, Salford in 1912 and was a popular Rector, comforting his parishioners through the First World War and the Great Depression.

 

After a long illness, Reverend Leytham died on Friday 29th April 1932 at the age of 65. He left a widow, son and two daughters. The funeral was held at his church on Monday 2nd May attended by many Ministers. The service was conducted by the Reverend Noel Lake Aspinall MA, Archdeacon of Manchester. At Weaste Cemetery, the last rites were conducted by the Reverend J Phoenix, Rector of St Cyprian's Church, who was a close friend.
