Arthur Whittaker (1886 - 1932)


Arthur Whittaker was a well known figure at Salford Town Hall, giving 32 years service to Salford Council's, Town Clerk's Department.

 

Arthur was born in 1886 and entered service with the Council on 15th March 1900 as a 14 year-old Office Boy. He became Clerk to the Watch Committee and during the coal stoppage he was Assistant Coal Controller for Salford. From May 1918 until his untimely death he was First Assistant Committee Clerk.

 

In early October 1932, Arthur showed signs of heart trouble, followed by a short illness. On 21st October he suffered a fatal heart attack at his residence in Hamilton Road, Longsight. He was 46 years old. He left a wife and a 15 year old son. The funeral took place at Weaste Cemetery on Tuesday afternoon 25th October, which was attended by Mr H.H. Tomson, Salford Town Clerk.
