George enlisted in November 1914 and after training sent to the Dardanelles and to Egypt after the withdrawal of troops.

In February 1916 he was posted to France.
 

 

A comrade of George writes in a letter to Mrs Dawson:
"We were always good chums in the Battalion and we promised to write to each others parents if anything happened to us." Your beloved son was killed by my side and it was the greatest shock to me to find that he was dead when I had thought he was asleep.His death must have been instantaneous for he never murmured.It will be a great relief to you that your son died a hero's death."
Prior to the war George had worked for 'Gresham and Craven Engineers' and attended Christ Church.
